Sites Menu > Articles > Mercury Poisoning Welcome to what we hope are the most useful
resources and articles on the Internet about Mercury poisoning and the
hazard this extremely durable toxin poses in the modern world. Our
advice is that educating yourself about your health and any medical
conditions you might have is essential to your treatment. It is not a
substitute for professional medical advice, but rather a key component of
your relationship with your Doctor. In the last 10-15 years mercury has exploded from a relatively obscure concern to one of the most important environmental issues facing the world. What the news networks don't tell us is that maybe all these endless population studies are damage control--a desperate attempt, after the fact, to disprove a scientific fact: Mercury is the second deadliest element on Earth and a known neurotoxin. The problem is that mercury is almost unbelievably toxic -- a single drop on a human hand can be irreversibly fatal. One would think that such a deadly toxin would be tightly regulated and rare, yet mercury is found almost everywhere these days; it's released into the environment by the burning of fossil fuels, where it accumulates in fish; it's commonly used in dentistry and the making of vaccines; it's a common ingredient in eye drops, skin creams, pesticides, disinfectants, electrical switches, fluorescent light bulbs, and latex paints. Biological accumulation of even small amounts over time can have disastrous consequences. Mercury poisoning is one of the most difficult conditions to treat. Health problems caused by mercury depend on what type of mercury is involved, how much has entered your body, how it entered your body, how long you have been exposed to it, and how your body responds to the mercury. Organic mercury compounds are very damaging. They are toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin and eye contact. These mercury compounds can attack all body systems. They can cause nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea, kidney failure, skin burns and irritation, respiratory distress, swollen gums and mouth sores, drooling, numbness and tingling in the lips, mouth, tongue, hands and feet, tremors and incoordination, vision and hearing loss, memory loss, personality changes and headache. Elemental (metallic) mercury and its compounds are toxic and exposure to excessive levels can permanently damage or fatally injure the brain and kidneys. Elemental mercury can also be absorbed through the skin and cause allergic reactions. Ingestion of inorganic mercury compounds can cause severe renal and gastrointestinal toxicity. Organic compounds of mercury such as methylmercury are considered the most toxic forms of the element. Exposures to very small amounts of these compounds can result in devastating neurological damage and death. When mercury pollution is released into the air from the burning of fossil fuels. It falls down directly onto waterways or is deposited on land where it can be washed into the water. Bacteria in the water cause chemical changes that transform mercury into a highly toxic form - methylmercury. Methylmercury accumulates in fish, with larger fish generally accumulating higher levels of methylmercury. If you are pregnant or could become pregnant, are nursing a baby, or if you are feeding a young child, federal guidelines recommend that you limit consumption of freshwater fish caught by family and friends to one meal per week.
