Aromatherapy is the treatment or prevention of disease by use of essential oils. Two basic mechanisms are offered to explain the healing effects. One is the influence of aroma on the brain, especially the limbic system through the olfactory system. The other is the direct pharmacological effects of the essential oils.

Aromatherapy has roots in antiquity with the use of aromatic oils starting around for 6000 years ago. The Greeks, Romans, and ancient Egyptians all used aromatherapy oils. The Egyptian physician Imhotep recommended fragrant oils for bathing, massage, and for embalming their dead nearly 6000 years ago.  Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, also used aromatherapy baths and scented massage.  However, aromatherapy now involves the use of distilled plant volatiles, which is a twentieth century innovation.

Below we've included what we hope are the most valuable Internet web sites related to Aromatherapy.  You should consider all forms of alternative medicine as a supplement to traditional medicine - not a replacement for it.  DISCLAIMER

The definitive source for information on this topic is the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, an educational, nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public awareness of the benefits of true aromatherapy.  NAHA is actively involved with promoting and elevating academic standards in aromatherapy education and practice for the profession.  Visitors looking for a comprehensive resource on Aromatherapy should visit AromaWeb.com, which offers over 250 pages of articles, recipes, synergies, and profiles of essential oils.

For those interested in becoming a certified practitioner, there are several schools in the U.S. that teach the necessary skills.  For example, The Institute of Integrative Aromatherapy offers a distance learning program in Aromatherapy that is endorsed by the American Holistic Nurses Association. Their curriculum includes continuing education for nurses and massage therapists.  Another possibility would be The College of Botanical Healing Arts located in Santa Cruz, CA.  Approved by CA State Bureau of Post Secondary Vocational Education, CBHA offers live and correspondence courses toward certification.
